Laminitis is essentially inflammation of the laminae in a horse’s hoof. It is very painful and can be caused by a few different things: 1. Medical overload or ‘supporting limb laminitis’ 2. Inflammatory diseases 3. Endocrine diseases
The treatment for laminitis is a combination of anti-inflammatory medication, box rest and foot support. It is also important to find and treat the underlying cause of the laminitis, as well as assess diet.
Once a horse gets laminitis, it’s predisposed to getting it again so prevention is important.”
